This week we bring you Noname rap, Australian indie pop, and some holiday music.

New Music Monday 11/15

On this week’s queue…

1. “Reality Check” by Noname (feat. Akenya & Eryn Allen Kane)

You might recognize Noname’s raspy and relaxed voice from her feature in Chance the Rapper’s “Lost,” but this time around we’re bringing attention to her own sound from her album Telefone. Her raps are powerful: the lyrics are smart and natural in that they never seem to reached for, the content real and relevant, and her breath control meticulous and unerring. We’re hoping she drops a new release soon, but for now we’re okay with reminiscing on this song and her others from 2016.

2. “Chateau” by Angus & Julia Stone

If you like the English indie pop band The xx, then you need to check out this song from Australian indie pop band Angus & Julia Stone. Like The xx, their beats are soft and rhythmic, and their lyrics switch back and forth between boy and girl point of view. “Chateau” is no exception– listen for yourself to hear the story of two early lovers who are asking one another to take a leap of faith, all layered on top of a foot-tapping tempo that is addicting.

3. “Pretty Little Fears” by 6lack (feat. J.Cole)

Granted, this song is pretty popular– but on the off-chance that you missed it, we want to bring it up again. The duo of 6lack and J.Cole is a mix of new and established voices, and together they write a solemn modern day love letter. 6lack takes us through the song with wholehearted singing and rapping, and J.Cole’s verse hurts in the best way.

4. “Santa Baby” by Kaskade (feat. Jane XØ)

A holiday day edition recommendation– not just this one song, either, but the whole album (honorable mentions: “Jingle Bells,” “Deck the Halls,” “Cold December,” and “Silent Night”). If you start listening to Christmas music right after Halloween, this one’s for you; if you wait until after Thanksgiving, come back to it; if you don’t listen to Christmas music at all, no worries– but maybe take a pass at these tracks just once (warning, you might get hooked). Kaskade’s Christmas Deluxe takes traditional Christmas songs and remixes them into electronic and pop versions that are perfect for holiday cocktail parties that might need a little bit more modernity. There’s even a few originals on the album, like “Cold December.” I get it if you think this is an abomination to classic Christmas music, but can you really deny a good beat when you hear one?
